Introduction to Cold Production

Instructor Profiles: Kirby Hayes has an extensive cased hole wireline background.  Currently his company, KHI, represents 9 corporations offering services and products primarily involved in heavy oil production in the Lloydminster area.  Kirby has conducted various seminars, short courses and workshops, co-authored technical papers, and prepared many presentations on wide-ranging topics of interest to heavy oil producers.  Bob Mottram, R.E.T., R.P.T. (Eng.), has more than 23 years of heavy oil experience, in various engineering and operations roles with both heavy oil E&P and service companies.  Bob has conducted numerous heavy oil training courses.  He currently works for Grit Industries and Cold Weather technologies in Lloydminster and is primarily responsible for the development of new technologies aimed at increasing the efficiency and profitability of heavy oil operations.  Ron Sawatzky is a senior research scientist with the Alberta Research Council in Edmonton, with more than 16 years of experience working in research and development for heavy oil recovery processes.  For the past 13 years he has served as one of the team leaders for the cold production research group at ARC.

Course purpose:  This course is designed to provide an overview of current practices and theory for heavy oil cold production. Course content includes:

·         Production Engineering – drilling and completions, production practices, transportation and marketing;

·         Reservoir Engineering – recovery mechanisms, field behaviour, modelling;

·         When Cold Production Fails – problems and remediation, workover methods and stimulation options.

 

Course benefit:  This two-day course is for technical and operations staff with heavy oil producers and service companies looking for an introduction to reservoir and production issues involved in the cold production recovery process.
